Batu Caves

Khana drove us here and bought us postcards and seemed excited to share his culture. That day was a very good day!

Batu Caves

These caves are shrines to different Indian Gods. People (young, old, physically challenged, everybody!) walk up the never-ending steps to reach a huge cave system that has statues of cows and gods. Many people bring cow’s milk in ornate containers to serve as a gift to the gods. Cows are sacred to many Indian people. A lot of Indians cut out meat entirely from their diet and become vegetarians. I heard people say that they don’t eat dirty (meaning they don’t eat meat.) Or some will say that they eat clean which means the same thing. We saw people with white dots smudged onto their foreheads. Our cab driver, Khana, explained that the white powder is partly made from cow dung (poop) and is very sacred. Some babies had it rubbed all over their heads.
We were probably the only white people from quite a distance and many people stopped to say hi or hello and take pictures with the boys. Maddux’s blonde hair and Lennon’s curls are unusual here. Someone even took a picture with Jesse and he wasn’t even a soccer fan. I was transfixed on the monkeys and Emerson wanted to leave the cave because the smell was pretty gnarly.

Deep thoughts by Jack Handey… Just kidding!

RANDOM THOUGHTS BY KIM MARSCH 🙂

This might not be exciting to read, but I thought some of it interesting/funny/different and I want to share it and remember it.
~A lot of restaurants serve warm water because it is better for digestion.
~In Hong Kong, if you are angry at someone and want to put a curse on them, you can go to a place under a bridge where old hags (not a nice name) or witches will put a curse on that person for a fee. Wowsers!
~Right before the Hong Kong light show was going to start- our crew was pretty exhausted. I told maddux to look at the building that resembled a huge purple illuminated egg. He said “I don’t care!!!” Alrighty then!
~We’ve met many people who think they know Americans- they say that we all like war/guns, drinking alcohol and beaches. Funny.
~We were all so hungry in the middle of a long bus trip- We stopped at a market for a bathroom break and food stop. I saw these chicken things that looked like little pot pies or something. I ordered 3. Jesse bit into one and said “it’s like there are bits of carpet in it.” Gross! It looked exactly like brown shag carpet and it had no flavor what-so-ever. We bought some Pringles. A much safer choice!
~I wish I could do a commercial for Sea Bands. They are pressure point bracelets that keep you from getting sick on planes, trains, boats, etc. They work like a dream!
~I don’t know how I lived my life before kids with the daily usage of wipies. I could do a commercial for those, too.
~There are some beautiful birds, flowers and insects around these parts. I saw a blue bird that was so magnificent… I thought of Grandma Choody (Antie Yvonne’s mom.) She loves birds!
~Seatbelts – sometimes they’re available, sometimes they’re not.
~We love seeing motorcycles with whole families on them, especially little babies smushed between the mom and dad.
~Some hotels and restaurants know that tourists are frequently looking for places with wi-if service so they put signs up that say they have it. Then you ask for the pass code and they say “no wi-fi here. So sorry.” The people are so nice, it’s hard to be the least bit mad.
I have to put some more pictures on the blog – my times to do it are few and far between and by the end of the day- I am pooped! The huts we’re at now say that they have wi-fi, you just have to find the good spots. Everyone is sleeping right now so I am out by the beach typing away. I just washed a bunch of clothes in the sink and hung them everywhere in our room and outside to dry. Tomorrow we will do some hiking, snorkeling and have a well-deserved day of hanging on the beach. We’ve been on the road a lot!

Cheap, Yummy Sushi

Ok, so this sushi doesn’t come close to Antonio Park’s restaurant in Montreal, but the conveyor belt was really cool! You just grab whatever you want. The plates are each a certain color that determines the price. Our waiter was super nice and their bathroom actually had a toilet seat and toilet paper! Yay! It’s the little things…

An Imam at the Mosque

We met an incredible man at the mosque. he was an Imam. He talked to us for at least 45 minutes about the Islamic faith. He taught us so much. He said that not many Americans visit the mosque, but he would like them to so he can help educate people about Muslims. Sometimes what we see on our news stations might be a bit different or skewed from the truth. I went to shake his hand, but he reminded me that he could not touch me.

Visiting a Mosque

20130206-161145.jpg
I had to wear the garb because Muslim women are supposed to resemble the Virgin Mary. Women must cover their hair and not let skin show. Some women only have their eyes showing. A woman can be touched by her mom, dad, siblings, husband and children but no one else. The double kiss, hugging, even shaking hands is a no-no. While we were at the mosque, a couple was getting married. They were sitting on fancy pillows in the middle of friends and family. A man was officiating and two other men who had to be righteous and at peace with their God spoke up in favor of the couple tying the knot. After the ceremony, a special card is made with a picture of the couple so they can legally check into hotel rooms together. They must have proof that they are husband and wife.
Jesse is wearing the garb because they said his shorts were too short and they were at his knee!
