This little girl (about 4 years old) was walking around in red high heels on a steep incline that led to the river. An older girl was with her (she was about 6.) In the town, you saw kids Lennon’s age (5) walking their younger siblings across crazy busy streets. I wanted to go help them, but they could navigate better than I could.
None of us tried the snails- but Jesse is thinking about it.
One of the pictures is of the wat in Phnom Penh. It was beautiful- especially at night with the moon out. Another picture is of a big clock near the park. The boys are working on telling time, so what a perfect place to learn! The rest are things to see while out and about in the city.
The black and white photo display is never-ending. The photo of the woman with her baby (to me) depicts utter and total despair. In a couple of the photos, I liked that the men were smirking (which was not only illegal, but surely disrespectful to the Khmer Rouge.) Following those photos, were ones of people beaten to death beyond recognition- most likely some of the people who went down fighting.
Notice the chain shackle near the stone heads- they were in each cell. It’s hard to believe that this place was a high school, then a prison and now a museum. When you walk in, there are beautiful flowering trees and 14 white tombs holding the bodies of the last prisoners to die. It is very quiet, except for the birds singing.
A high school in 1975 was turned into a prison for anyone who opposed the Khmer Rouge (KR.) They could put you in the prison for any reason. They tortured people until they signed confessions (even if they weren’t guilty of anything) then they were killed. The barb wire thwarted any attempts at suicide. The bed and pillow are remnants of the last days of the prison. When it was liberated, there were only seven survivors. Of them, there was a sculptor, a painter & a photographer kept alive to document the genocide.
