We had an afternoon to chill out before our flight to Burma so we went to our buddy Michael’s hotel and hung with with him and his good friend Joe. The kids went swimming, we had lunch and Joe made fun of Michael for a majority of the time (they’ve been friends since college so there was lots of funny banter.) We had a great, relaxing afternoon with them then took off for the airport!
We might swing through Bangkok one last time before Vietnam- so maybe our paths will cross again Michael! Safe travels. Love!

On Train to Bangkok before Myanmar
We had to get to Bangkok to catch a flight to Myanmar. We took a quick train ride then a 13 hour overnight train. Piece of cake! We’re like old pros on the train. There was a guy with a baby who wouldn’t leave us alone, though. I think he felt that if we touched his baby- it was good luck or something. Every time we walked passed him or made eye contact- he would wave us over. The kids were really good about it, but we were all tired and I think the baby was over it, too! hee
Emerson hanging her little birdcage
Em wanted to hang a little birdcage (it had the two birds that she released at the top of a small mountain.) She hung it in the hopes that a bird could use it to make a fancy nest!
Remnants of War
Americans used Laos as a gateway into Vietnam. The US claimed it was on the border so technically was Vietnam but it was not. Laos didn’t want to be involved and did not give permission to the US but they set up shop anyways. There are still some remnants (odd how they are right next to a Buddhist temple.)
Underrated/Overrated
UNDERRATED: clean clothes, plastic baggies, warm showers, dental care, Emerson says shoes!, deodorant (come on! It is hot and you’re in cramped quarters with strangers! Aye-yi-yi!), humming and singing (whether you’re good at it or not, it just makes you feel better), clean water – for drinking and bathing (see photo)
OVERRATED: electricity (dinners by candlelight and walks down dark paths are awesome!), doing your hair and make-up (huge time waster and when no one else does it- everyone is au natural!), haggling- Jesse is so much better at it than I am. It makes me uncomfortable!
Exploring Vientienne
This was a rough day for me. I got super sick on the plane ride. After the plane- a crazed cab driver took us on a scary ride to our hotel. We get to the hotel that we have booked and paid for and they say they don’t have a room because there are five of us and not four. (Lennon is a big kid, but come on!) We had been cramming ourselves on one bed in some rooms for pete’s sake!) I just want to lie down somewhere and the front desk people are getting all snippy so I say that their policies are stupid! What a great example for the kids, right? Long story a bit longer, Jesse did some sweet talking and we were in a room within minutes. The next day- I stayed at the hotel to blog a bit while the four of them explored the city. On a positive note, the front desk lady and I did make up and my illness only lasted 24 hours!
The Honor System
While visiting one of the temples, we saw a table with a display of little statues and painted canvases for sale. To the right of the art was a price list, a book to record what you bought and a bowl to put the money in. We bought the small canvas that Em is holding in the photo. A sign said that any money collected would be used to re-paint the inside of the temple. The bowl was full of money! I love how trusting these people are, but I can imagine if you did take anything- you’d probably get some pretty bad karma coming your way if you steal from monks!
Buddha’s Footprint? Hmmmm…..
Here is us walking to a little portal. Signs all around say that it’s Buddha’s footprint inside- he must have been a huge dude because the size of the foot is about as tall as Emerson. I don’t want to be a negative Nelly- so you’ll have to travel here and judge for yourself whether or not you think it’s the real deal. We all had our doubts.
