Anyone hungry for some fried insects?

20130219-224311.jpg
There was a teenage girl selling these and she was going to town munching away! Jesse is always telling the kids to try new things. Emerson saw these, looked at Jesse and said “hey! you should try new things, dad!” No Marsch’s tried them, but someone told us they taste like chicken! hee

Turtles for Kiki!

Hey Kiki! We took this picture for you because we know how much you love turtles. These turtles were selling for 20 baht- which is less than a dollar! They were so cute.
Em also saw baby four toes’ at a street market. So tiny! To be honest, we’re not sure if they were selling them to be pets or to be food!

More of Koh Lanta

I didn’t realize we took so many pictures here. One of the pictures is of the water coming in really close to the street level. Many buildings are on stilts and some restaurants have eating areas on pier-like platforms.
You can find a hammock almost anywhere. The kids were swinging in these for awhile until someone gave us a dirty look because they were trying to relax nearby and the kids’ buffoonery was getting out of control.
The little Thai girl in the picture came up to me while I was sitting with the kids on the floor. She started slapping and tickling me on the back. I turned around and took a picture and she was so excited to see it right away. My brother and I have talked a few times about how lots of kids today have immediate gratification for almost anything they want because of technology. Remember taking your film in to get developed and after waiting so long to fill up the roll, take it in, get it processed – only two or three photos were actually decent? Funny.
Lennon was loving roaming the beach and watching the sunset. He seems to have gotten bigger in the almost month we’ve been traveling!

Koh Lanta.

We didn’t stay at the hotel with the stone elephant or lilypads outside of the rooms (they had a ‘no guest under 12 years old ‘ policy. Well lah-dee-da!) There are some really beautiful hotels on these islands that incorporate nature as much as possible- some restaurants, too. Just the other day while walking past a cute little sidewalk bistro type place- we saw a rat the size of a chihuahua run across the steps. Aye-yi-yi!

I liked these. Some places decorate so simply here.

“It’s like playing I Spy with the crab all the time.” – maddux

Maddux and I followed around two little crabs for awhile in koh lanta. Sometimes we’d lose them (they looked like little tumble weeds moving so fast sideways.) Maddux said it was like I Spy trying to find them. The sunset was stellar!

“A dream you dream alone is only a dream. A dream you dream together is reality.” -John Lennon

This picture was taken at a beach in koh lanta while watching one of the best sunsets we’ve ever seen. We had great food, played some intense games of UNO, then watched crabs dig holes. Man, we still know how to party pretty hard!

Thanks for the quote, Fiona (huss sister 🙂 I love it.

Life is good!

This little cabana thing in koh lanta was brilliant. It was our little home base between a beach and a pool. It was a great place to take a break from the sun, and the breeze was fantastic!

La coocarochas, foreign hospitals and smells…

~We went to the hospital in koh lanta to get Em’s second round of rabies shots. It was trippy. The nurses wear uniforms that were worn in the US in the 1950’s, complete with the little cardboard looking headpieces. We got there early and were asked to fill out some paperwork (no computer system available.) We filled out the papers, then someone asked if it was a monkey bite or a dog. A monkey bite would have made for a better story, but the truth is- it was a dog. The nurse told us to go to window #8 to buy the medication. We went to #8, showed the woman a paper and she told us to go the the window labeled with an ‘H.’ We had to pay in cash at H, head back to #8 to get the medication, then go show the nurse we were ready for the shots. Em got the shots (I had her answer random questions to keep her mind off the discomfort- didn’t work so well.) After she was done, we were sitting there waiting for the nurse to put band aids on. She said “Bye, bye. You done.” That was that. We go out to the car (that we rented for the day to drive to a waterfall) and the car was dead. So, Jesse hopped in a car of some random guy who was in the parking lot waiting for a patient in the hospital. They drove to an auto shop and about ten random houses looking for jumper cables with no luck. When you rent something or get a hotel room in a lot of these places, they keep your passport as a form of collateral. We couldn’t get in touch with the car guy! We were stranded at the hospital, needed to get the passport and catch a minivan leaving in a couple hours. Long story, longer – we hopped in the back of a guy’s taxi pickup truck (kids had a blast) and went to track down the guy who rented us the car. All’s well that ends well. We got the passport back and made the minivan departure time to head to Trang. Whew! Lennon and I even got a nap in.
~I wish this blog had a way to transmit scents. Some of the smells we have encountered have been unearthly. We went to a restaurant today in Bangkok that actually had a ‘no farting’ sign on the front door. Apparently, it must be a problem in small, hot, crowded places. Yikes. I have attached the photo. (There are other things they don’t want you bringing into or doing while you are in the restaurant. Love it.)
~A few days ago we returned to our room after a long, hot day of exploring- Lennon went under the bed to hide from Maddux. Maddux comes in and says he saw something run across the floor. Lennon thinks that Maddux is trying to trick him into coming out of his hiding spot. A few seconds later- Lennon leaps out and yells “what was that?!” A two inch long cockroach runs by me heading toward the bathroom. I jump on a bench while the kids grab the ipad to take a video. Jesse grabs a little garbage can to cover it. We were laughing and jumping around. Ah! The adrenaline rush a little creature can provide!

Koh Lanta. A pleasant surprise.

We spent a couple of nights and a nice long day re-grouping on this island. The reviews for the hotel we stayed at were horrible, but it had a warm shower, a clothesline, a toilet and AC so we were happy! Maddux thought the coolest thing about the area was the tide. the water would come in so close in the evening that it was almost touching the stairs that took you down to the beach. In the morning, it went out so far that it exposed coral everywhere. It looked like you were on another planet. We did not have the camera. Bummer. The pictures kind of speak for themselves. It was a nice time. The only downside was the amount of garbage around town and on the beach. How hard is it to throw something in a garbage can?!
