One of the guys with the horses told me not to worry- that the soldiers weren’t real. Whew! Thank goodness. Getting daggers thrown at us might have altered our travel plans!

We came across these “soldiers” putting on a show about guarding Petra
Petra- like a movie set
We got to Petra and hopped on some horses to get us to the entrance. So fun until you get off and the horse handlers give you a bunch of crap because they want a bigger tip. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again- we will not miss the haggling and harassment! In some countries, I swear they try to break your spirit! They chase after you trying to sell something or they say the tip isn’t good enough. We talked to people at the tourist information stop before we rode the horses and they told us what was considered a good tip and the horse guys still harassed us. I have no problems telling pushy people to go away- but day in and day out, it gets tiring. Men in various countries do not like to be told “no” – especially by a woman. ‘Too bad, so sad!’
Anyhoo, these are some more pictures from the horse ride. It was picturesque and fun. We rode by an area where the Indiana Jones movie was filmed and tombs that looked cubes are called spirit boxes. Em’s horse stopped to take a huge pee- Lennon laughed about that for awhile. Maddux’s horse handler had a bad leg so he had to walk slowly. Poor Maddux was way behind yelling, “wait for me guys!!!”
Last leg of our journey to Petra
These photos are of some breaks we took to stretch our legs, go potty and just stop and take in the magnificent desert view. The air was so clean and refreshing.
Back to our usual style of travel
We were spoiled in Dubai and Egypt, but we had to leave and continue our adventures! When we were waiting at this bus stop- the flies were swarming around us and the bathrooms reminded us of India. Emerson was SO mad. If she could have ended the trip right then and there- she would have. The boys loved going up to the different bus drivers to see which bus would be ours. We took an overnight bus for 13 hours, then another 3 hour bus, a taxi and I forget what else. Then we had to go through some pretty intense border crossings. We made it to Petra (in Jordan) in about 22 hours or so. Whew!!!!! Thank goodness Petra did not disappoint.
Photos from Jesse’s last minute sightseeing in Egypt
The kids snuck in a much needed nap, I posted to the blog and Jesse went around town to see some more sights. It truly is an amazing place. The people seem very proud of their culture, but when you get to the touristy areas- as in other places we have visited- you really need to hold your own. Most of the time, we had friends to help us navigate the craziness. I would highly recommend going there for the pyramids alone- they really did take my breath away and we find ourselves talking about them still.
In the car, you forget you’re in the middle of the desert…
Sometimes you forget you’re in a desert, then you see sand all over the highways. Egypt is surreal. We really liked it.
